There are thousands of stories about WWII, each offering a unique point of view. This fascinating book tell the story of the heroic French people, ordinary citizens; their daily fears, the food rationing, sometimes no food at all, no heat, sirens screaming in the middle of the night, and half asleep they had to rush to bomb shelters or some other hiding place. The story begins when the author, a child of ten, tells of her family’s daily struggles for survival with her mother, her sister and the two Jewish children her mother took into her care. It is an extraordinary look at the horrors of war away from the battlefield.

My Unforgettable Years Growing up in WWII France Ms Huguette Vidalis Scoggins 9781493508273 Books

This book is delightfully well written while retaining the viewpoint of a child. A child who is growing up in, and responding to, events hugely traumatizing to her family and her nation. Her Maman comes across as an astute and admirable woman, and the author herself as a cooperative and resourceful child, while her older sister is quite a "character." The three of them not only absorb the dangers, the pain, and the tragedy of war themselves, but also generously help others along the way. At last, the ordeal begins to unwind, and the author emerges from the crucible, having not only survived, but still able to thrive. Her account is an easy read, and well worth the reading.

My Unforgettable Years Growing up in WWII France Ms Huguette Vidalis Scoggins 9781493508273 Books Reviews

My Unforgettable Years Growing Up In WWII France is an engaging true story of the survival and great courage of a young French girl, her family, and the two Jewish children her family sheltered and cared for during the war. The author describes her WWII experiences, ranging from life-threatening to amusing, in a way that brings them to life. Her ancestors’ 1922 emigration from Greece to France is also of interest. What a wonderful treasure for Huguette’s family and friends to have her experiences documented in this book. I recommend this book for readers of all ages.
Very impressed with the story as well as the storytelling. Absolutely riveting. This is the kind of story that makes your little day-to-day problems feel insignificant.
This book provided a detailed history of a young girl growing up in occupied France. The matter of fact manner in which which Ms. Scoggins journaled and her perspective as a young girl living in this era made the war very real.
I loved reading this beautiful story. I spoke with Mrs. Scoggins in San Antonio recently. She is
a beautiful soul. I spoke with her on the phone after finishing her story and we shared other
beautiful moments that I will cherish forever. I highly recommend this wonderful book filled with
so much history that the public should enjoy!
I read this book when it was first published, and recently re-read it. The story is written by a woman who was just a youth when her mother took 2 children to hide from the Nazis during WWII. Her sister, who was 14 at the time, took off on her bicycle and worked for the French resistance, delivering messages and grenades to the Allies, through the German-occupied streets of Paris. What a life! What a story! I wonder how many stories like these were never told........
Like all the books written years after WWII it has "enahanced" memories. However it is still a very good account of growing up in those troubled times.
