Janet Wright left tiny Graylee, Georgia at age five, when her mother fled a destructive marriage. Now forty and reinventing herself after a failed engagement, Janet returns as the sole inheritor of her recently murdered father's valuable estate. Life should be easy, but she can't resist pulling at the threads of the apparently open-and-shut case. Before long, she finds herself tangled in Graylee's web of secrets, lies, and scandals--and in fear for her own life.

I am in awe of Janet Wright, the main character in Mr. Weinstein's completely tantalizing new novel. She came completely alive for me, all sass, heart, tenacity, sarcasm and wounded child blending magnetically, (and that's really just the tip of the iceberg in terms of this character's dazzling multi-faceted nature) a complex and intensely compelling main character. Mr. Weinstein did an utterly marvelous job of creating a novel that was amazingly fast-paced with real suspense/mystery elements that pulled me swiftly and eagerly along this bullet-train of a book. What's even more incredible about that is that, even with the page-turner prowess Mr. Weinstein evidenced, there were an immense amount of true literary moments of rich description and heightened character development, especially in reference to the aforementioned delightful beyond description Janet Wright. This a story set in the South, but it's a story applicable to everyone as we see a convergence of cultures, geographical elements and world views (Janet is from GA and returns home to it, but spent many years in New York. She is a hybrid character, a modern woman who is a Crevecourian Melting Pot of influences) blend masterfully here. Yes, there are touches of the Southern Gothic, which I loved, but there are also so many contemporary elements at play here, all whirling together deliciously. And, honestly, I was never sure until the very end who did what and why in terms of the mystery/thriller elements. Unpredictable in the very best of ways. I also want to note that, while there is a beautiful budding romance incorporated into the narrative, this is also the story of a delicate and touching friendship between Janet and Timothy Blagensburg that is a microcosm of the meshing of worlds that occurs in this novel: she's a middle-aged white woman, very educated and who has inherited great wealth, and he is a twenty-something African-American young man from truly humble beginnings just starting his career and life. They both carry family legacies of splendor and horror and the way those two legacies intertwine is phenomenal. Honestly, the way the lives of these two characters intersect is surprising, then heartbreaking at first...but ultimately a gargantuan joy, how the world really should be. This is a book that works well on an immediate surface level of being a great yarn that you can't put down because it's paced so incredibly well, it's charming and also heralds a delectably twisty plot, but there's such depth here, too, a meta narrative of the New South and all that it is and all that it can be. I truly hope we get to see many more Janet escapades as I'm in love with her!

I chose this rating because the book held my attention I couldn't wait to for the mystery to be solved. I'd recommend to all my friends and family. I'd love for a sequel.
A suspenseful thriller set in a small Southern town with a fascinating set of characters and plot twists that take the reader by surprise. A good read!
This book is so fun to read; it's suspenseful and comical at the same time. I turned the pages as fast as I could, and yet was sad when it was finished. I found myself yesterday missing Janet, the main character! The author truly brings each character in the story to life - you'll feel like you're right along side them. Truly an entertaining read!
For all readers who feel they've been there-done that, here's a fresh story told in a fresh voice about mysteries in a small town in Georgia. From the opening page, you're captured and thrust forward on an enjoyable ride with an intelligent and witty character as she tries to solve the age-old question, "What the hell is going on here?"

Easy to imagine this novel as a film, and hopefully, it will be one some day soon.
I tried to like this book but just couldn't. The main character is just not likable or written well. She's like how a middle age guy would think a woman would behave and think. All the racist and sexist innuendo got old.
When her father is murdered 40-year old Janet Wright returns to the small town of Graylee, Georgia, where she lived with her family until her parents split when she was five. She has not seen or heard from her father since, but he has become the "second-richest" man in Graylee. He leaves his local real estate empire to Janet, his only heir, who has spent most of her life in New York. She is met with hostility upon arriving in her new town, and Aftermath is the story of her relentless search for the reason behind her father's murder and the hostility she encounters. She soon sees the local police chief, her late father's former attorney, and a novelist known as the "richest" man in town as possible keys to getting answers but she finds all three men tight-lipped, like everyone else in Graylee. The exciting climax holds several surprises after many misdirections, false leads, and the surprise appearance of a mysterious character who further complicates things. The attractive but never-married Janet's romantic insecurity resulting from unending failed romances, and her sharp New York tongue that leads her introduction to the citizens of the rural Georgia town, lend interesting other dimensions to Aftermath. I will look forward to George Weinstein's next book!
Aftermath is a delightful, eminently readable, suspenseful page-turner about a woman returning from NYC to a small Southern town. The characters become part of your life, and her fish out of water relations with the townies are delightful--and scary. She can't leave well enough alone, and her efforts to get to the bottom of a decades old scandal uncover murder--and a bang up ending with satisfying surprises.
